Trump Admin Asks Supreme Court To Freeze Deadlines In Biden-Era Cases
  • PublishedJanuary 28, 2025

The U.S. Department of Justice, under the administration of Donald Trump, has officially requested that the Supreme Court pause legal actions concerning President Joe Biden’s policies, which include student loan forgiveness and environmental regulations. Acting Solicitor General Sarah Harris has filed motions to delay these cases while the new administration reviews the relevant policies. Although the Supreme Court was set to hear arguments soon, the request from Trump’s DOJ seeks to extend deadlines, potentially leading to an indefinite postponement of the proceedings.

President Biden’s student loan forgiveness program, which has provided relief to over 5 million borrowers, faces legal challenges from Republican attorneys general who argue that Biden has exceeded his authority. The 5th Circuit Court has blocked Biden’s “borrower defense” rule, intended to forgive loans for students who have been defrauded. While the Supreme Court has agreed to consider these issues, the request from the Trump administration may render them moot. Furthermore, Trump has voiced his opposition to Biden’s climate initiatives, advocating for an increase in domestic fossil fuel production.
