A tradition revealed: Biden’s farewell letter for Trump in the Oval Office is now fully revealed
President Donald Trump found the letter from Joe Biden on his Desk on Monday. It is now revealed what it said
On Monday, former President Donald Trump drew public attention by showcasing a letter from President Joe Biden, which he found in a drawer of the Oval Office’s Resolute Desk.
This act follows a long-standing tradition where outgoing presidents leave a personal message for their successors.
Recently, the complete text of that letter has come to light.
“As I depart from this sacred office, I extend my best wishes to you and your family for the next four years,” Joe Biden stated, as reported by Fox News. He added, “The American people—and people across the globe—look to this house for stability during the inevitable storms of history. My prayer is that the years ahead bring prosperity, peace, and grace to our nation.”
Biden closed the letter with, “May God bless you and guide you, as He has blessed and guided our beloved country since its founding.” The note was signed “Joe Biden” and dated January 20, the day of his departure from office.
This correspondence reflects a more amicable tone compared to the tumultuous exchanges witnessed during their campaign, wherein Biden labeled Trump a threat to democracy, while Trump depicted Biden as the head of a “criminal family.”
The practice of outgoing presidents composing notes for their successors is believed to have originated in 1989, when President Ronald Reagan wrote to his vice president-turned-successor, George H.W. Bush.
Although Trump chose not to attend Biden’s inauguration in 2021, basing his decision on unfounded allegations of election fraud, he adhered to the tradition by leaving behind a letter.
“The president wrote a very generous letter,” Biden remarked at that time. “Because it was private, I won’t discuss it until I have the chance to speak with him, but it was generous.”
