The Mom Who Stabbed Her Baby
Rachel Tunstill, 32 years old, who was convicted in 2017 for the murder of her infant daughter, Mia Kelly, was found deceased at HMP Styal in Cheshire. Tunstill had inflicted fatal wounds on Mia using scissors and subsequently disposed of her remains in a waste bin. Initially sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, her conviction was later modified to infanticide; however, a retrial reinstated the original life sentence.
The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is currently investigating her death. During the trial, it was revealed that Tunstill, a psychology graduate diagnosed with autism, believed she was experiencing a miscarriage. Disturbing online searches and references to notorious criminals were also uncovered. The judge presiding over the case described the act as a horrific assault on a defenseless child. This case highlights the critical need for adequate mental health support and preventive measures to prevent such tragedies from occurring.
