I remained stationary, holding the cheese in my hand.

The young girl was grasping a bag of candy. My gaze fixated on her, and I found it hard to believe that the tales I had heard were indeed accurate.

The child placed the candy bag on the shelf and, guided by her mother, departed.

I swiftly returned to the candy counter. The bag of sweets the child had possessed was priced at $2. I filled my basket with candies and, on my way to the checkout, inevitably passed the meat counter. The woman and child were peering into the display.

“Eight slices of salami!” the woman instructed, continuing with, “Thin.”

My heart seemed to stop.

I inquired with the other sales attendant for a stick of salami and a stick of pork pastrami.

I managed to reach the cashier ahead of them.

Tears welled in my eyes.

I awaited their exit outside the market. I presented the bag of sweets to the little girl:

“Santa came here and left me this bag because you were in the store.”

The girl looked up at her mother with her large blue eyes. The woman nodded her approval.

“See, Mom, Santa Claus is real!” she exclaimed.

I was at a loss for words; a mix of pain and joy enveloped me simultaneously.
