Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not be present at the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump on Monday, having also missed the funeral of President Jimmy Carter.

The Office of Barack and Michelle Obama has confirmed to the Associated Press that former President Barack Obama will participate in the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies, while Michelle Obama will not attend the event.

Michelle Obama has chosen to extend her holiday vacation in Hawaii, the birthplace of her husband, President Barack Obama, and has cited a “scheduling conflict” as the reason for her absence from President Jimmy Carter’s funeral, which took place at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday.

Following the death of her mother, Marian Robinson, in May, the former First Lady has adopted a more subdued public presence. During the Democratic National Convention in August, she openly discussed the profound impact of her grief, stating to a large audience at Chicago’s United Center, “I still feel her loss so profoundly—I wasn’t even sure I’d be steady enough to stand before you tonight.”

Prior to Election Day, Michelle Obama was actively involved in various campaign events for Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris, demonstrating her political engagement despite facing personal difficulties.

Barack Obama is expected to attend the inauguration, while his wife Michelle will be absent—a deviation from their typical joint appearances at such events. Nevertheless, Barack Obama is anticipated to be present at the swearing-in ceremony on Monday.

Their interaction during President Jimmy Carter’s memorial service has sparked significant online discussion, particularly in light of their historically strained relationship. Notably, Barack Obama was observed laughing at a comment made by Trump during the funeral, which has led to speculation about their exchange.

What is the reason for her absence? Furthermore, an individual familiar with the Obamas’ close associates informed Page Six that this decision is intentional. She has consistently demonstrated authenticity and sincerity. The source indicated that she has been very discerning regarding her public appearances.

With some hesitation, she participated in the election. There is no obligation for her to rally around [Trump], despite their previous unity. She is not compelled to make any statements. Page Six remarked, “Her absence conveys a significant message.”
