Astro’s owner, Nicole Graham, along with her daughter, was riding their horses along the beach near Geelong, situated south of Melbourne, Australia. However, they soon faced soft sand, which turned the ground beneath them into a perilous mire.

While Nicole’s daughter and her horse managed to escape, Nicole and Astro became increasingly trapped in the mud. Astro quickly became submerged up to his neck in clay, facing the serious threat of choking. Nicole remained by Astro’s side for three hours, engaged in a desperate fight for survival.

As time progressed, the situation for Astro became more critical. During this urgent period, Nicole worked diligently to keep her 1,000-pound (450 kg) horse calm, preventing him from sinking deeper into the mud. After three hours, Astro was on the verge of suffocation, facing the grim reality of dying from thirst and exhaustion. To heighten the urgency, the tide was rising.
