The Night We Were Saved by a Future Criminal
My wife and I were returning home from a party at 2 AM when our vehicle broke down in a secluded area.
At that time, mobile phones were not prevalent, so we had no choice but to wait. After an hour, a college student happened to pass by and kindly offered us a ride into town.
We attempted to give him some money for his assistance, but he declined, saying, “Happy to help.”
Years later, my wife called me in distress. With a trembling voice, she urged me to check the news.
It was revealed that the student was, in fact, a 35-year-old man who had committed robberies against more than 30 individuals in remote locations, specifically targeting drivers during the late hours.
I felt a chill run down my spine upon discovering that he was wanted by law enforcement in multiple states.
His tactics were disturbingly clever—he would either pose as a lost hiker seeking a ride or offer to drive people in his own vehicle.
Once he gained their trust, he would rob them of all their belongings and abandon them in desolate areas.
To this day, we remain uncertain as to why he chose not to rob us.
Perhaps it was due to our presence as a couple, or maybe my tall and muscular physique intimidated him.
Regardless of the reason, we consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have escaped without harm.
