The tragic incident led to the death of seven-year-old Archie York. Following this, another body, believed to be that of a 30-year-old man, was found among the debris of the three houses that collapsed on Violet Close in Benwell.

Additionally, six other individuals have been taken to the hospital, and it is currently thought that all individuals have been accounted for. The remaining residents have found shelter with friends and family.

The explosion occurred at Violet Close, Benwell (PA). “It is with deep sadness that I speak to you today in light of the heartbreaking loss of a young child,” remarked Superintendent Darren Adams at the scene. “As a result of the incident that transpired in the early hours of this morning, a seven-year-old boy has sadly lost his life.

“I am confident that the communities of Elswick and Benwell, as well as our wider region, will wish to join me in extending their thoughts and condolences to the family and friends. The pain and anguish they are experiencing is unimaginable.”
