In 2010, Sandra Bullock received a life-altering phone call. “Your placement is here,” announced the voice on the line.
A few weeks later, she found herself on stage, receiving her first Oscar for her performance in The Blind Side. However, her thoughts were elsewhere. “All I wanted was to go home and feed Lou,” she expressed, referring to her newborn, whom she had eagerly anticipated for years.

In 2005, following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana, Sandra Bullock felt a compelling urge that led her to consider adoption.
“Katrina happened in New Orleans, and something told me, ‘My child is there.’ It was strange,” Bullock recounted in an interview with Today’s Hoda Kotb.
Years later, in January 2010, Bullock received the long-awaited call.
“He was unexpected, he was not planned. I got a call one day, ‘Your placement is here,’ and that came years after I had filed for it,” the 59-year-old star of Speed shared with CBS News.
Little Lou
Reflecting on Louis Bardo Bullock, the three-month-old boy from New Orleans whom she secretly adopted in 2010, Bullock remarked, “I looked at him and thought, ‘Oh, there you are.’ It felt as if he had always belonged there,” she reminisced. “He nestled perfectly in the crook of my arm. He looked into my eyes. My child was wise.”
The Miss Congeniality star further noted, “The wonderful thing I was often told was, ‘The perfect child will find you. You will find your child.’ But it’s hard to believe that when you’re wondering, ‘Where is my family?’ When it finally happens, you understand exactly what they meant.”
Just weeks after Lou’s arrival, Bullock stood on stage at the Kodiak Theatre, accepting her first Oscar for her leading role in The Blind Side.
Yet, her heart was with Lou, and she longed to be at home with him.
My thoughts were consumed by the notion that he was at home. I felt indifferent to my surroundings; my only desire was to return home. Then, I found myself sewn into the dress. I needed to extricate myself from it, yet all I could think about was going home to care for Lou.
Just a few days later, her marriage to reality television star Jesse James fell apart, leaving Bullock to navigate life as a single mother to an infant.
Bullock expressed, “So much had transpired. How does one process grief without causing harm to their child? A newborn absorbs everything you feel. My primary responsibility was to [Lou] and ensuring that my grief did not overshadow his first year of life.”
‘Louis’ took center stage
“No one truly comprehends the shift in priorities that comes with having a child until they experience it themselves,” Bullock remarked regarding her transition from career to motherhood. “It happens naturally… he arrived, and now, Louis is the focus.”
Growing up in a nurturing and joyful environment, young Lou once looked at his mother and declared, “I’m going to have a baby soon.”
Although Bullock had not intended to expand her family, she heeded her son’s words, which sparked a realization within her.
“I came to understand that perhaps he possessed some insight. When I reflect on it, it coincided with the time Laila was born,” Bullock noted. “Louis has a unique way about him. He is a natural leader, and he guided me to Laila.”
Laila, who was in foster care in Louisiana, became Bullock’s daughter in 2015 at the age of three.
Reflecting on Laila’s experiences in childcare, the Ocean’s 8 star shared, “She would hide in the closet with all her clothes on, or perch on a bookshelf, always prepared to leave,” the actress recounted, emphasizing that she consistently reassured Laila that she would not be “going anywhere.”
He was right. Recently, Bullock described Laila as “unafraid.”
“She’s a fighter, and that’s the reason she’s here today. She fought to keep her spirit intact. Oh my God, what she is going to accomplish. She’s going to bring some real change.”
Lou, now 13, “is super sensitive…He’s wise and kind,” the Bird Box star tells People. “I saw that when they handed him to me. There was a spiritual bigness to him.”
Though fans will be disappointed, the versatile actor is scaling back her work schedule to again be a single mother.
Bullock last appeared in 2022’s The Lost City with Channing Tatum and Bullet Train with Brad Pitt.
“I can be creative, I can be part of a community, but right now, work in front of the camera needs to take a pause,” she said.
