In contemporary society, social media serves as the primary means of communication for a significant number of individuals. It has become commonplace to share images of one’s children for the enjoyment of friends and family. A young mother engages with social media in a similar manner; however, the reactions to her posts and the treatment of her child differ markedly. She has important insights to share.

A teenager, once not expected to survive beyond 18 months, has recently graduated from high school with a distinguished award. An 11-year-old utilized her phone to document a teacher’s inappropriate bullying, resulting in a five-day suspension. A mother was taken aback upon discovering the cause of her baby’s severe blisters on his feet.

Little Raedyn was born with Pfeiffer syndrome, which leads to various abnormalities in the skull, face, and limbs. Nevertheless, for Natasha, her son is perfect, and she eagerly shares videos of him whenever possible.

Unfortunately, the online world can be harsh, and Natasha frequently encounters hurtful comments. One individual on TikTok callously questioned, “What quality of life will he have?” while another remarked, “Why would you make him live like that? Such a miserable life that you’re permitting him to live.”

In addition to online negativity, Natasha faces intrusive inquiries from people in her daily life. She recounts instances where strangers approach her with disrespectful questions such as, “What’s wrong with your child?” or “Why does your child look like that?” She emphasizes that such inquiries are inappropriate and dehumanizing.

The constant barrage of questions makes public outings challenging for her. “It’s exhausting to explain my son’s health problems over and over,” she expressed. Natasha struggles to comprehend the intense scrutiny directed at her son based solely on his appearance. She asserts, “He lives a life like every other child… does he look different? Absolutely – but that doesn’t make him any less.”

She expressed, “He deserves life, he deserves acceptance – I will advocate for that until my last breath.”

Natasha conveyed her frustration regarding the unsolicited concern she receives, particularly when individuals approach her with inquiries while she is simply going about her daily routine.

“It is important for people to realize that I am merely a mother and my son is just a child… our lives do not solely center around his diagnosis,” she stated.

The weary young mother further remarked, “My son may appear a bit different, but that does not mean he is merely a lesson for others. It is mentally and emotionally draining to repeatedly discuss his diagnosis and clarify his health issues to others.”

“We are an ordinary family. I hope for a future where society embraces individuals with disabilities and refrains from making judgments based on their appearance or limitations.”

It is truly disheartening to witness that, even in contemporary society, individuals are quick to judge those who differ from them in any respect. We can only aspire for a world that fosters kindness and acceptance.
