In 1993, after her home in Benoit, Mississippi was destroyed, she embarked on an extraordinary project, transforming an old Boeing 727 into a remarkable and fully functional residence.

From Adversity to Achievement
Ussery’s journey began after the sudden passing of her husband, which left her and her two children in search of a new home. Confronted with financial constraints, she initially contemplated the purchase of a trailer as a feasible solution.

However, she soon realized that acquiring a sufficiently large home to accommodate her growing family was beyond her means. At this juncture, her brother-in-law Bob, an air traffic controller, suggested an unconventional alternative: living in an airplane.

Intrigued by this idea, Ussery visited a decommissioned Boeing 727 and felt an immediate connection to it. Remarkably, the aircraft was available for only $2,000, including shipping costs. Inspired by the fact that Donald Trump owned a private Boeing 727, Ussery decided to name her new acquisition “Little Trump.”

Fueled by determination and creativity, Ussery took on the formidable task of converting the aircraft into a unique and comfortable home. With an investment of less than $30,000 (approximately $60,000 in today’s terms), she embarked on a project that would require significant time and financial commitment. To ensure the aircraft’s stability during the renovation, she strategically placed it on her property, directing the nose toward a picturesque lake, while securely anchoring the tail with concrete to maintain its position.

Ussery laid a solid foundation before eagerly embarking on the task of dismantling the interior of the aircraft, which spanned an impressive 1,500 square feet. With 76 windows, the nearly 138-foot-long plane allowed for an abundant flow of natural light.

To bring her vision to fruition, Ussery made substantial modifications to the aircraft’s design. While the original windows were non-functional, the existing air conditioning system ensured a comfortable living environment.

Her efforts were directed towards improving insulation and installing new flooring throughout the aircraft. Additionally, Ussery ingeniously repurposed the plane’s bathroom and overhead compartments into effective space-saving solutions. The result was a beautifully designed living area that maximized the use of the available space.

An Exceptional Retreat of Comfort
Upon completing the extensive renovations, Ussery turned her attention to crafting a distinctive and welcoming living environment. The renovated aircraft now boasted three bedrooms, a cozy living area, a fully equipped kitchen, and a functional laundry room.

In her pursuit of surpassing basic requirements, Ussery enriched her redesigned jet with unexpected amenities, including a phone and an oven. However, the standout feature of her design was the stunning transformation of the cockpit into a luxurious master bathroom.

Ussery adeptly integrated a soaking tub to take full advantage of the stunning views that lay beyond. The design of the room was meticulously arranged to evoke a feeling of being suspended above the water for anyone who entered.

What sets Ussery’s achievement apart is that she executed this extraordinary transformation entirely on her own. From 1995 to 1999, she and her children lived in their repurposed aircraft, enjoying the unique experience of their unconventional home.

This journey proved to be profoundly fulfilling, prompting Ussery to ultimately share her creation with the public by converting it into a museum. Regrettably, during a brief relocation of the airplane, an accident occurred, causing it to slip from its carriage and disintegrate.
