This significant earthquake, registering a magnitude of 7.0, occurred off the northern coast of California. Local officials have confirmed that there were no reported fatalities or extensive damage resulting from the tremor, which struck offshore Humboldt County on December 5, 2024.

Several retail establishments reported items dislodging from shelves, and numerous residents experienced temporary power outages. According to the county’s official website, over 1,000 individuals in Humboldt County were left without electricity following the earthquake. Currently, there are no road closures, and damage assessments are ongoing throughout the region.

The earthquake proved to be a distressing event for many who expressed their feelings on social media. One local resident described the experience as overwhelming, stating, “It rocked our whole county!! It was crazy!”

A witness to the aftermath recounted, “I went to Hobbie’s market and I saw everything on the floor. It was a horrifying experience, and two of my friends were inside a classroom while the rest were outside.” A shopper at Walmart shared a similar sentiment, saying, “I was in the Walmart; it was so scary, the shelves were all rocking pretty bad.” Another individual exclaimed, “This was so WILD!”

One person reflected on the broader implications, noting, “This was one of the largest earthquakes in California, and although it did not result in significant damage, it is important to recognize that such a powerful quake can activate dormant fault lines. Therefore, the potential for a larger earthquake in the area remains a concern.”

In the aftermath of the earthquake, the National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, issued a tsunami warning for a significant portion of the northwestern California coast. However, after assessing the situation, it was concluded that no substantial waves were anticipated, leading to the cancellation of the warning. At present, there is no tsunami threat to Humboldt County.
