For a duration of two weeks, I dedicated my time to organizing and preparing, while Todd occupied himself with fantasy football and occasionally asked, “Do you need me to get anything?”

On the day of the event, I took charge of preparing the turkey, crafting delectable side dishes, and even baking two pies.

As for Todd, his contribution was limited to bringing a cooler of beer into the living room. That was the extent of his involvement.

After the meal, as guests complimented the food and decorations, Todd decided to take credit for everything.

“I’m truly pleased to hear that you all enjoyed it,” he remarked. “I aimed for something truly memorable this year.”

I found myself questioning whether I had misinterpreted his intentions.

“Oh, is that so?” I asked. “Which aspect were you hoping to make special? Is the green bean casserole more significant than the centerpiece?”

He, of course, ignored my inquiry.

This behavior encapsulates Todd perfectly. He craves acknowledgment without contributing any effort.

Last year’s celebration of his birthday was particularly unforgettable.

After weeks of hard work, I assembled a personalized photo album filled with images from our shared adventures and treasured moments. I was eager to see his reaction as he unwrapped it.

Upon finishing his perusal of the pages, he simply stated, “Oh. So, where’s the real gift?”

It was not just his words that stung; the audacity was remarkable.

I had married a man who once penned beautiful poetry for me, yet now he seemed incapable of appreciating a heartfelt gesture. That moment shattered something within me.

I realized that he was no longer the man I had once loved.

Then came his 35th birthday, which became the final straw.

During dinner, Todd casually mentioned his expectations.

“Claire, I’m looking forward to a grand, proper birthday dinner this year,” he said. “Let’s invite family, friends, and everyone else.”

I raised an eyebrow in intrigue. “Are you suggesting that I should handle the planning?”

Certainly, he responded. You possess remarkable talent in this area. Just ensure that it remains respectful, understood? I truly hope I do not find myself feeling embarrassed in front of all those individuals.

“Decent?” I repeated.

I devised an impressive menu that included spinach-stuffed chicken, rosemary potatoes, a charcuterie board featuring cheeses I could hardly pronounce, and a three-layer chocolate cake that would serve as the centerpiece of the meal.

Each evening after work, I returned home, tied my hair back, and immersed myself in cleaning, organizing, and preparing. I even borrowed additional chairs and a folding table from our neighbor, Janice, to guarantee that everyone would have a seat.

What was Todd’s contribution? Absolutely nothing.

“I’m swamped at work,” he remarked one evening, discarding his shoes and collapsing onto the couch. “But you can handle this, my dear. You excel at these things.”

Skilled in these areas? I was utterly drained to the point of tears.

However, instead of losing my composure, I smiled and said, “Yes, I can manage this.”

The long-anticipated day of the celebration had finally arrived.

I awoke with the sunrise, determined in my pursuit of perfection.

The house was spotless. The table was elegantly set with coordinated linens and delicate name cards that I had handwritten. The appetizers were perfectly chilled, the main courses were gently simmering, and the cake was adorned with exquisite edible gold flakes.
