On the occasion of my 90th birthday, I was eagerly anticipating a visit from my daughter, Angie, along with my grandchildren. Angie had assured me that they would spend the day with me, and I was filled with excitement at the thought of their arrival. However, as lunchtime passed without any sign of them, my anxiety began to mount. I attempted to reach Angie by phone, but she did not respond.

Just as I was coming to terms with the prospect of a solitary day, the doorbell rang. I hurried to answer it, delighted to find a familiar face—John, my daughter’s ex-husband, standing there with flowers and gifts in hand.

“Happy Birthday, Ma!” John greeted me with a cheerful smile.

I was thrilled to see him. “You really didn’t have to!” I exclaimed, feeling flustered as he presented me with my favorite chocolate.

“I couldn’t possibly forget,” he laughed. “How could I? It’s your go-to treat!”

Initially, he declined my invitation for dinner, but I insisted, and we spent the afternoon cooking and reminiscing about old times. Eventually, John inquired about Angie and the children.

“They were meant to come, but I haven’t heard from Angie. She hasn’t picked up my calls,” I replied, feeling disheartened.

John then called Angie, and the information he brought back left me in shock. Angie, along with her new boyfriend and the children, had gone on vacation without informing me.

John shared my disappointment. “She’s been planning this for a month. I can’t believe she didn’t even think to tell you.”

I felt a profound sense of hurt. My daughter had made a promise to be present, yet I found myself spending my special day alone, apart from John’s unexpected generosity.
