She offered a homeless man a pretzel and a cup of coffee

A homeless individual was seen gathering coins along the roadside while she was at Dunkin’ Donuts. Eventually, he made his way into the shop and began to tally his money. He seemed rather unhappy when she attempted to strike up a conversation with him. In a bid to engage him further, she offered to buy him a coffee and a bagel, as he had only about a dollar in change. He accepted her offer. They talked for more than an hour until she realized it was time to head back to her class. At that point, he communicated a message to her and requested that she wait.

I recently encountered a sociological study in which a young woman, appropriately attired, was placed alone on the sidewalk. Most passersby took the opportunity to ask if she required assistance and inquired about her parents. Conversely, when the same woman stood there in ragged, soiled clothing, she was noticed by several individuals, yet none offered her any help. Those who did glance in her direction often displayed expressions of contempt.

This highlights a concerning reality of our society: it prompts the question of when we will progress to a point where ungrateful individuals assess others solely based on their outward appearance. Additionally, why is the life of a wealthy person considered more significant than that of someone living in poverty?

It is encouraging to see that amidst hardship, there are still individuals who demonstrate compassion towards those who are less fortunate, fostering a sense of hope that humanity is not entirely lost.

During her school break, Casey Fischer was on her way to Dunkin’ Donuts for a coffee when she spotted a homeless man on the roadside collecting pennies. He later entered the establishment with the intention of purchasing something to eat.

As Fischer drew near, she observed that the man had managed to collect only a single dollar. With kindness, she invited him to sit at her table and graciously covered the cost of his coffee and bagel.

The man, who identified himself as Chris, shared his experiences of frequently encountering unfair treatment due to his homelessness. He acknowledged his past use of narcotics, which he felt had turned him into someone he loathed. Ultimately, he conveyed a desire to be the son his deceased mother would have been proud of, stating, “I tried, but I could not.”

Fischer informed Chris that, while she was delighted to meet him, she needed to return to her class. Nevertheless, he asked for a moment and presented her with a crumpled piece of paper containing a message he had written for her.

Upon reading the note, Fischer was astonished. She had not realized that her simple gesture of kindness had such a significant effect on the homeless man. For him, their meeting represented much more than just a meal; it was a pivotal moment in his life.

The note stated, “Today I wanted to end my life.” “…but I no longer feel that way because of you.” Thank you, dear lady.
