Hiker Meredith Langley enjoyed a peaceful walk in Jeffries Creek Park, South Carolina, which took a concerning turn when she came across a large brown snake near the creek. Langley documented her unsettling encounter on Facebook, sharing a photo of the massive snake, which was comparable in thickness to a tree root, leaving many users astonished. One particularly shocked commenter noted, “It’s probably swallowed somebody’s child already.” Many others speculated that the snake was a giant cottonmouth, a venomous species commonly known as a water moccasin. These snakes are often confused with the harmless brown water snakes that are native to the area. Langley’s warning post sparked conversations among online users, with some indicating they would consider avoiding hiking in the future. This alarming experience serves as an important reminder for hikers to remain vigilant while exploring the trails of South Carolina.
