The breakup between Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston had a profound impact, creating a noticeable void in the public sphere. While fans lamented the conclusion of their relationship, they were also captivated by the developing romance between Pitt and actress Angelina Jolie, recognized for her performance in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Eventually, Brad and Angelina began their relationship. Unfortunately, this partnership ended years later when Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, shortly after allegations emerged regarding an incident involving Pitt and their eldest son, Maddox, on a private flight.

The details surrounding the incident remain ambiguous; however, the accusations of child abuse led to investigations by both the FBI and the Los Angeles Department of Child and Family Services. According to US Weekly, Pitt was quickly cleared of any child abuse allegations. The divorce, coupled with the lengthy custody battle between Pitt and Jolie, is frequently remembered as one of the most contentious celebrity separations in recent memory.

On January 21, 2021, Jolie sent an email to her ex-husband, which later became public. In this message, she conveyed her feelings of sorrow as she informed Pitt of her intention to sell Miraval, “a business that is centered around alcohol.” Many view this as a reference to a previous incident on a plane where Pitt allegedly choked Maddox and subsequently poured alcohol on Jolie and the children.

The Maleficent star further expressed, “Even now impossible to write this without crying.”

The residence we brought the twins to and where we exchanged vows over a plaque honoring my mother holds profound significance. It is a place where I envisioned spending my later years; however, it also symbolizes the onset of our family’s decline.

“Miraval, for me, ceased to exist in September 2016,” she remarked, “and the events that have unfolded in the years since have regrettably validated that sentiment.”

In February 2021, Pitt agreed to pay Jolie $54.5 million to acquire her stake in Miraval, although the deal was complicated by their ongoing divorce proceedings.

She filed sealed documents detailing the incident on the plane, prompting Pitt to request that Jolie sign a non-disclosure agreement to prevent her from discussing any of his personal conduct towards her or the family in relation to the property sale.

Jolie described this request as an “unconscionable gag order.”

Pitt defended his request as crucial for the transaction, stressing the importance of “ensuring that the seller does not undermine the asset’s value after receiving payment.”

On October 5, 2021, Jolie Nouvel, the holding company overseeing her interest in Miraval, sold its stake to Tenute del Mondo, the wine division of the Stoli group owned by Russian billionaire Yuri Shefler, for $67 million.

It is not merely a coincidence that she transferred her interest in Miraval to a rival entity and allocated part of the family residence to an outsider immediately after a significant legal triumph for Brad, which resulted in a 50-50 custody arrangement, as revealed by a source close to Pitt to ET Online. The judge who awarded Pitt joint custody, John Ouderkirk, was later removed from the case by a panel of three judges, leading to the annulment of his decision.

In February 2022, Pitt filed a lawsuit against his ex-wife, her holding company, and the new owners of Miraval, claiming that Jolie had “contributed nothing to Miraval’s success.” In response, Stoli filed a counterclaim, accusing Pitt and his associates of engaging in “illegal and malicious actions aimed at harming Nouvel by undermining its investments and depriving it of its rightful role in the management of Chateau Miraval, a well-known producer of rosé wine.”

On June 1, 2023, Pitt submitted an amended complaint seeking to invalidate Jolie’s sale of Nouvel.

“Brad has accepted responsibility for all that he is accountable for from the beginning, but he will not take responsibility for actions he did not commit,” stated Anne Kiley, Pitt’s representative.
