astronauts are currently experiencing a remarkable yet challenging situation in space, as their eight-day mission has unexpectedly transformed into an extended stay at the International Space Station (ISS). Following the release of unsettling images, public concern has grown, with many expressing the belief that the astronauts have been “abandoned” in orbit.

On June 5, 2024, Sunita “Suni” Williams and Barry “Butch” Wilmore launched into space, marking the inaugural crewed flight of Boeing’s Starliner capsule, which was initially intended to last one week.

However, their expedition encountered unforeseen complications. After dealing with multiple thruster failures and helium leaks, the two retired Navy officers successfully arrived at the ISS, located approximately 250 miles above Earth.

Regrettably, NASA assessed the Starliner as too hazardous for a return journey, resulting in an extension of their mission until February 2025, when they are anticipated to return home aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.

Despite the unplanned prolongation, Williams, 59, and Wilmore, 61, have adjusted well to their extended stay. Williams, who took command of the ISS in September 2024, and Wilmore have engaged in various scientific research activities, maintenance tasks, and have even tackled unexpected issues, such as fixing a broken toilet.

Although they are in a situation that NASA prefers not to label as being “stuck,” the astronauts remain optimistic. Wilmore has remarked, “We’re just on a different path,” emphasizing the importance of a positive mindset. “I don’t view these circumstances as negative.”

Commander Williams echoed this sentiment, stating, “I enjoy every aspect of being up here.” In a December conversation with elementary students at a Massachusetts school named in her honor, she remarked, “Simply living in space is incredibly enjoyable.”

Concerns regarding Williams’ health have intensified following the release of recent clips and images, which depict her with pronounced weight loss and sunken cheeks.

One social media user remarked, “This does not seem truthful. That appearance resembles starvation.” Another individual expressed dismay, stating, “We have two individuals who are genuinely contributing to humanity’s progress, yet they are left in such dire conditions. February 2025? She appears unlikely to survive. It is truly unfortunate.” A third user commented, “It seems we are allowing them to perish up there.”

Additionally, one observer noted, “The woman appears to be in poor health, likely having lost significant weight and bone density. The man also looks unkempt and undernourished. Such circumstances are expected when a brief trip to the ISS turns into an extended ordeal. It feels like being imprisoned in space.”

Conversely, some users expressed confidence in the astronaut’s capabilities, with one stating, “No worries; she has extensive experience and is in good health, so they will be fine.”

In response to the concerns, Williams maintained that her weight has remained stable since her launch, attributing her altered appearance to a “fluid shift” that occurs in weightlessness, which can cause blood to redistribute within the body.

“There are numerous changes that occur up here. I believe there are rumors suggesting I am losing weight, but I weigh the same as when I arrived,” the astronaut explained. “Fluid shifts are common; for instance, individuals in space may notice their heads appear larger as fluid redistributes throughout the body.”
