On a tranquil day in the woods, I engaged in target shooting. I positioned myself behind a fallen log, settled in comfortably, and took a photograph to share with my husband. For me, it was merely another day relishing the beauty of nature, with sunlight streaming through the trees and the rifle resting in my hands. I sent him the image, anticipating that he would be impressed by both my marksmanship and the serene surroundings.

“Whose hat is that?” he inquired.

I examined the picture once more, feeling perplexed. “It’s mine,” I responded, recalling the white cowboy hat that lay beside me in the image.

“No, it’s not,” he retorted. “You’ve never owned a hat like that. That belongs to him.”

His words struck me with a jolt as I comprehended the implication of his statement.

In fact, that hat wasn’t just any hat—it was the same style of hat my ex-boyfriend used to wear all the time

It was even more troubling that the hat bore a striking resemblance to one I had previously given away, a piece I believed I had disposed of long ago.

I attempted to clarify that I had simply chosen a random hat in haste before leaving, but my husband was unconvinced. He believed it was not merely a coincidence; rather, it served as a signal that I was still clinging to remnants of the past. The fact that I had taken a photograph while wearing that hat led him to feel as though the past was infiltrating our present.

Despite my repeated assertions that it was purely accidental and that I had not considered the origins of the hat, the damage had already been inflicted. The image of me reclining beside that hat was sufficient for him to conclude that something was amiss.
